THE FLAG OF CHAPPAQUA,
THE FLAG OF VICTORY!
GREELEY & BROWN.
It was priced at USD $7899.
William Garrison, 29 January 2024
On the eBay website, the flag is shown next to a measuring tape: It’s about
1½ inch high and about 2 inches wide; it’s printed on cloth and sleeved to an
actual stick (from twig plucked from a tree in Mr. Greely’s own farm, as
certified); the printing seems to be wrongly offset vertically, with the red
component mismatching the blue by slightly less than half a stripe (I wonder
whether this printing error affected all units produced).
The canton is
square and shows one larger central star surrounded by three concentric rings —
respectively with 7, 13, and 16 stars; these are all white with five points,
roughly regular (as much as geometry can be ascertained in such a small scale on
coarse fabric), and all point to the fly. The shade of blue is very dark: at
first glance, the text seems to be in a 3rd color, black.
The text is set
in blue capitals on the white stripes in a wide bold serif typeface similar to
Copperplate, except for "The flag of Victory!", which is sans serif; "of" is set
at a smaller size, while "The Flag" looks tighter and less expanded.
At
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/s7cAAOSwbY9kZSfh/s-l1600.webp we can see the
reverse side, not meant for display and showing seeped-through inking, illegible
text, and the glued sleeve area at the hoist, which was folded too tight in this
one item of this product, in a way that the area of the flag containing the
actual design, incl. some of the stars, is warped off the flag plane.
